Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett Make History With Their the 2023 Oscar Nominations

Amidst the usual snubs, surprises, triumphs, and whiteness, the 2023 Oscar nominations also include some history-making firsts worthy of celebration. While Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett are breaking ground in the acting categories, RRR is bringing Indian representation to a stacked list of contenders for best original song.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh is the first Asian-identifying woman to be nominated in the best actress category for her starring role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her co-stars, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis, were also nominated for their supporting roles. The film’s directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, are up for an award, and the film itself is in the running for best picture.

Earlier this month, Yeoh took home the best actress award at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards.

Angela Bassett

After becoming the first actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take home a Golden Globe, Angela Bassett has now earned the first Oscar nomination for an actor in the Marvel franchise. The star of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was last nominated for an Oscar in 1994 for her role in the Tina Turner biopic, What’s Love Got to Do With It.

“Naatu Naatu”

From the film RRR, “Naatu Naatu,” has become the first song from an Indian movie to be Oscar nominated for best original song. The infectious jam, cowritten by composer M.M. Keervani, has already beaten out the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga at the Golden Globes in the same category.

This year’s other history-making nominees include 90-year-old composer John Williams, who is now the oldest person to be nominated for an Oscar, as well as the most-nominated living person, with 53 nods under his belt. And for the first time since 1934, the best actor category is comprised entirely of first-time nominees.
